ABA Therapy

Applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy is a tool that helps children, especially those with autism, succeed in daily life. ABA applies basic behavioral practices — including positive reinforcement, teaching in small steps, prompting and repeated practice — to facilitate the development of a child’s language, social interactions, independent living skills and other aptitudes.

Originating with the scientific principles of Dr. B.F. Skinner in the 1960s, applied behavior analysis training programs gained popularity treating children with autism in the 1980s because the therapy works. Based on decades of research, ABA is proven to be the most effective method to teach children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other developmental disabilities. ABA practices have also been endorsed by medical professionals — including the Surgeon General, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Association for Science in Autism Research. Whether you’re a parent, caregiver or teacher, you, too, can trust that ABA will help the children you love.

How Does ABA Therapy Work?

ABA behavior specialists and therapists analyze your child’s behavior and identify the causes of his or her behavior — which could be communication challenges, attention-seeking patterns or avoidance tendencies. The team then creates measurable goals that address the triggering factors with the purpose of reducing maladaptive behavior (even if it’s complex) and promoting adaptive behavior.

During therapy sessions, the therapist breaks objectives into small goals, offers positive support, includes prompts and promotes practice. Families also receive training, so they can use the same applied behavior analysis techniques at home. Over time, the therapist collects data, tweaks the goals and helps the child master each step and build on his or her achievements — a strategy that improves overall success.

While there are varying applications of applied behavior analysis therapy, Invo Behavior and Therapy Services and Autism Home Support Services take a holistic approach in implementing the core methodologies of ABA to build on a child’s skills and further develop capabilities. These methods include pairing and play, Discrete Trial Training (DTT), Natural Environment Teaching (NET), Verbal Behavior (VB), Pivotal Response Training and more.

What Are the Advantages of ABA?

ABA can be used to teach children a variety of skills and positive behaviors, including:

  • Communication
  • Positive Peer Interactions
  • Self-Help Skills (toileting, dressing, bathing, etc.)
  • Academics
  • Fine and Gross Motor Skills
  • Play and Leisure Skills
  • Life Skills
  • Vocational Skills

While numerous therapies exist to help kids with autism, ABA relies on data. The methodology is effective in decreasing challenging behaviors such as noncompliance, aggression, tantrums, self-injury, feeding problems and bed-wetting.

Additionally, ABA works for children of all ages. It also involves the entire family and can be performed in schools, homes and centers.

To help your child discover and reach his or her potential, implement ABA. For more information on a personalized therapy option or to talk to our professionals about our ABA therapy programs or your child’s specific needs, contact Invo-Progressus today.
