Navigating Confidence
An Orientation and Mobility (O&M) Specialist working in a school-based setting can expect to help students who are blind or visually impaired develop the skills needed to move safely and independently within their environments. Their work often includes teaching students how to navigate classrooms, hallways, and outdoor areas using techniques such as cane travel, spatial awareness, and sensory cues. O&M Specialists collaborate closely with teachers of the visually impaired (TVIs), classroom teachers, and families to ensure students can access all areas of the school and participate fully in daily routines and activities. Lessons are highly individualized—tailored to each student’s age, vision level, and learning needs—and can take place anywhere from a busy cafeteria to a quiet neighborhood street. Patience, creativity, and adaptability are essential, as instruction often extends beyond the classroom into real-world settings.
In addition to direct instruction, O&M Specialists play an important role in advocacy and accessibility planning. They may assess environments for safety, recommend accommodations such as tactile maps or environmental modifications, and educate staff about best practices for supporting students with visual impairments. Collaboration is key, as O&M Specialists work across teams to ensure students are confident, safe, and independent travelers. The role offers a unique blend of teaching, problem-solving, and empowerment—helping students gain the confidence to explore their world with greater independence and self-assurance.
