Speech and Language Therapy

The Invo Behavior and Therapy Services and Autism Home Support Services Speech Language team bring a comprehensive, collaborative approach to ABA and Speech Language Therapy. Our expert clinical leadership specializes in speech and language therapy for children and adults up to age 21. Each therapy plan is tailored to the individual needs of our clients, helping them achieve their maximum potential. If feeding and/or swallowing difficulties are an issue, including the individual having a limited diet, we can address that as well.

How Does Speech and Language Therapy Work?

Your speech and language pathologist will begin by conducting a thorough evaluation of your child's language and speech development. He or she may conduct a physical examination of your child's face and mouth as well as formal and informal evaluations to find out the level of speech and language your child expresses and understands. Armed with this information, he or she will create a customized treatment plan designed to address your child's individual needs. Periodically, your speech and language pathologist will perform evaluations to monitor your child's progress and change his or her goals to keep your child moving forward.

A speech language pathologist can help with:

  • Pragmatics/social language/functional communication — an important component of speech and language therapy for autism
  • Augmentative communication needs (high-tech and low-tech)
  • Articulation (speech sounds)
  • Dysphagia (feeding and swallowing difficulties)
  • Syntax (how words are put together)
  • Morphology (smallest units of meaning in a language)
  • Phonology (sounds of a particular language)
  • Stuttering
  • Motor speech disorders (Apraxia/Dyspraxia)
  • Voice disorders

Children develop at their own pace, in their own time. For children with autism, their speech and language development is often behind that of their peers. Speech therapy is especially important for these children because it can dramatically affect their behavior. Think about how frustrating it is when you speak to someone who does not seem to understand what you are saying. Now, compound this with anxiety, overstimulation and sometimes obsessive behaviors. Relieving some of that frustration through speech and language therapy for autism is one of the best ways to improve your child's quality of life. Once children with autism can communicate, they can express discomfort in a way that allows them to have their needs addressed without tantrums or other behaviors that further isolate them from their peers.

Feeding Therapy

Some children have difficulties realted to eating and drinking. The flavor, color or texture of certain foods and drinks may not suit them, or they may have dysphagia — difficulty feeding or swallowing. Our team of trained therapist can design a personalized treatment plan to help them overcome their barriers

Struggling with speech and language delays or feeding difficulties can be difficult for children at all ages and level of communication. Whether asking for an object, telling about a day at school or interacting with peers our skilled therapist can help your child’s life through communication.
